Barred Up Scaffolding Elevates Training Opportunities in Whanganui
Barred Up Scaffolding, a family-owned business founded in 2020, is making significant strides in enhancing workforce training and safety standards in Whanganui. Through a successful partnership with the PEP (Port Employment Precinct) and Vertical Horizons, the company is bringing vital industry training to the region, including a dedicated working-at-heights program.
This initiative has opened doors for local workers to gain hands-on experience and essential skills in a traditionally high-risk industry. Perhaps more importantly, they can achieve this experience locally, rather than heading out of town.
The PEP was established by the Whanganui District Employment Training Trust (WDETT) to facilitate and champion education, training, and support for improving employment opportunities in Whanganui, specifically around Te Pūwaha, the Whanganui port revitalisation project. WDETT is a project partner in Te Pūwaha.
PEP business pathways activator Seletar Taputoro believes Barred Up’s partnership with the PEP has been particularly transformative.
“The team at Barred Up have enthusiastically approached opportunities with us from the get go,” she says.
“Initially, with training of their internal team, followed by work placements, and then to now, by bringing the working-at-heights programme to their site in Whanganui.”
Students reaching new heights with Barred Up
In 2023, three Barred Up staff members participated in the Foundational Leadership Training and Strategy Mentoring Program, funded by the PEP. These programs provided leadership skills, empowering the team to build a stronger, more capable workforce, while also allowing them to mentor and lead future employees effectively.
Barred Up’s commitment to training extended beyond their internal team. In November 2023, the company provided a valuable work placement opportunity for one Fast Track student, who later secured a casual position within the company. Later, a second Fast Track student completed a successful work placement in June 2024 and was also offered a casual position.
Working-at-heights now in Whanganui
Perhaps most notable, however, is Barred Up’s role in bringing the critical working-at-heights program to Whanganui. As part of their collaboration with Vertical Horizons, Barred Up Scaffolding was contracted to set up scaffolding at the PEP’s Rangiora Street office for training purposes.
Barred Up kindly donated their staff and the scaffolding free of charge to support the programme.
“We were so fortunate, as this initiative allowed local workers to access safety training without needing to travel to other cities, filling a crucial gap in Whanganui’s industry-specific education offerings,” says Seletar Taputoro.
Then in August this year, Barred Up announced a partnership with Vertical Horizons to launch specialised training courses in Whanganui. These include mobile elevating work platforms and scaffolding.
This initiative aligns with their vision of creating a dedicated training space, shared with JJ Roofing Ltd, underscoring the importance of high-quality training and workforce development in the area.
Big steps forward with Barred Up
Looking ahead, the partnership between Barred Up Scaffolding, PEP, and Vertical Horizons promises even more growth. The companies are committed to furthering their collaboration in the coming year, with a continued focus on enhancing training, improving safety standards, and supporting the development of local talent.
Seletar Taputoro believes that Barred Up Scaffolding’s efforts are an excellent example of how small businesses can have a profound impact on community.
“With a shared vision for fostering growth and skills in Whanganui, Barred Up Scaffolding is well-positioned to continue contributing to the region’s economic and professional development.”
“Meaning, as a community we will be better placed to ensure our young people are ready for work, and that safety standards in this sought after industry are met.”
